For 4th through 6th Grades. This group is designed keeping in mind the different needs and interests of children in their pre-teen years. This is done in a variety of ways:
1. Exploration: During the “Faith Force Classes” time (9:30 a.m. Sunday), these children have their own room which is arranged and decorated in a way that appeals to their sensory values. Comfy couches, a relaxed atmosphere where questions are encouraged, and of course snacks. This is not done in order to appeal to them as if they were some sort of niche demographic. Rather, it is done with the hope of allowing the children to feel free to seek deeper understanding of the Scriptures and to see their faith as extremely relevant as they face the increasingly complex world around them.
2. Discussion: Topics of study for this group are slightly different than the younger elementary classes. Study and discussion is still Christ-centered and Biblically-based, but more attention is given to areas of struggle these children may be facing more acutely. These children are often confronted with contrasting viewpoints to the Christian worldview. Examples may include social expectations, relativistic religious viewpoints, and questions of how science and faith relate. In fall 2010, for example, these children dealt with topics such as “Why does God allow suffering?” and the topic of friendship and relating to others. Biblical stories and Scripture verses guided us through these sticky topics.
3. The Word: It is also our desire that these children would learn the books of the Bible as well as gaining a clear understanding of God’s whole redemptive story. Chronological story telling will be utilized in the Spring semester. Each child will receive a copy of “The Action Bible” (either to borrow or buy) and will be encouraged to read it during the weekdays. On Sundays, specific stories have been chosen for their particular importance to the overall flow of the Biblical narrative. Our hope is to cover all the major stories from creation to Christ’s ascension and to give these kids a good overall understanding of why Jesus came and died, and how all the Scriptures speak of him.
4. Activities: Finally, we do have outside activities planned at various times of the year for these children and (sometimes) their parents to enjoy along with them. A recent example was a “Tram Day” where we took a good sized group of kids and many of their parents up the Sandia tram and enjoyed fellowship and snacks afterward. An upcoming event (details to come soon) is to go and serve someone within our body with household and/or yard work needs. The tentative plan is to have our boys involved in this service project to help develop relationships among them. We will go to a local park or indoor gym to play basketball afterward.
