Selections from the Psalms: A Song of Security

From the Desk of Chris Risk:

Psalm 121 is a song of Security.  It was a popular song that the Jewish pilgrims would sing as they “ascended” the hills of Judea to attend the festivals required by God’s Law to Israel.

Psalm 21 is praise and encouragement for God’s help, keeping, protection and preservation but Psalm 121 also tells us much about the God who never changes and still helps, keeps, protects and preserves His children today.

We learn much about our God from these lines of the song.

  1. The LORD Our Helper (121:1-2)

He is our helper too.  Better yet, we have THE Helper, the Holy Spirit…

John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.”

Later, in verse 26, Jesus says that this Helper is the Holy Spirit Himself.

  1. The LORD Our Keeper (121:3-4)

The Lord “keeps” us on the path and holds us steady…

Jude 24, “Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy…”

But He also “keeps” us, as in has us saved…

John 17:15 “I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.”

III.       The LORD Our Protector (121:5-6)

2 Thessalonians 3:3, “But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.”

  1. The LORD Our Preserver (121:7-8)

1 Peter 1 “… He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

All the verses of Psalm 121 are true today; because the Lord they sing about is still Lord today and we talked about why the Lord is helping, keeping, protecting, and preserving us.

God has a plan for our lives.

Romans 8:29 “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”

We are being conformed to be like Jesus and it is the Holy Spirit who lives in us now who does this.

2 Corinthians 3:18 “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit is in us, molding us, teaching us and keeping us in Christ, until Christ is formed in us. (Galatians 4:19)

He is the guarantee within us that we will never lose our salvation.  We are saved.  We are helped, we are kept, we are protected, and we are preserved.
